The Best Wheelchair Adapted Cars for This Year

3 minutes read time

Choosing the perfect wheelchair accessible vehicle to suit your lifestyle comes with many questions; does it have enough seats for all the family? Is the wheelchair access simple and straightforward? Is there good visibility for everyone in the vehicle? Will it fit on my drive?

With some fantastic options on the market, we’re taking a look at five of the best wheelchair adapted cars on sale this year. Based on some of the most popular vehicles on the road, you can be sure there’ll be no compromise on style, features and engineering.

Citroen Spacetourer Quantum

Citroen has a long-established reputation for innovative technology combined with a touch of French flair. The Spacetourer Quantum has everything you would expect from a premium wheelchair accessible vehicle at an affordable price, and with three different interior trim levels and seven external paint finishes to choose from, you can make this car uniquely your own.

Wheelchair access is via the rear of the vehicle by the integrated low-level ramp, and the wheelchair passenger sits in the second row, putting them at the heart of the vehicle. Plus, being in front of the wheelbase offers the most comfortable ride. There are three seats plus the wheelchair space as standard, with the option to add a further seat in the second row, and two tip and fold seats.

VW Caddy5 Canto

Known for their style and reliability, Volkswagen vehicles never disappoint. Packed with practical features such as DAB radio with touch screen and air conditioning, the VW Caddy 5 Canto is the ideal family vehicle, with seats for five people plus the wheelchair passenger.

The versatile layout includes 60/40 split folding rear seats, making this stylish vehicle versatile enough to accommodate everything you need, whatever your plans for the day.

A low angle rear ramp with single latch release and 56-inch headroom makes entering and exiting the vehicle easy and comfortable, and the lowered floor ensures you’ll have plenty of headroom and a great view wherever your journeys take you.

Ford Custom Quantum

There’s a reason the Ford Custom is so popular – these stylish, flexible vehicles have endless possibilities. When you enter the Ford Custom Quantum, the first thing you’ll notice is the sense of space. The full-length floor conversion allows the wheelchair passenger to sit in the second row of seats – perfect for being right at the heart of conversations. Head height is a generous 60 inches, and with the ability to carry up to eight passengers, there will be plenty of room for everyone.

Add the optional powered ramp for ever greater ease of access and you have all the makings of the perfect WAV.

Ford Grand Connect Flame Plus

Sleek styling, a great specification and a smooth ride make the Ford Grand Connect Flame plus a fantastic choice for anyone searching for a great looking car with loads of practical features.

Ford’s 1.5 TDCi engines deliver smooth, quiet and fuel-efficient performance, taking the stress out of every journey whether long or short.

Available with either the original three rear seats, or one fixed seat either side of the wheelchair channel, there is more than enough room for up to 6 passengers and still plenty of luggage space. And all that room means that access via the 66” ramp is comfortable and fuss-free.

Citroen Berlingo Blaze

The compact Berlingo Blaze opens to reveal a Tardis-like space inside, meaning that this practical car doesn’t compromise on interior space and comfort. This deceptively spacious vehicle has seating for five people, plus a wheelchair. The innovative, lightweight, FoldFlat ramp makes it easy for the wheelchair passenger to access the four-point restraints, and when not in use, the ramp folds down to create a flat floor.

You can also expect to get great fuel economy, with the Blue Hdi 100 6 speed manual option offering an impressive performance of up to 57mpg.
