What is Motability?

Since 1978, the Motability Scheme has been supporting people with disabilities in achieving greater independence, through access to affordable, worry-free mobility.
Motability customers are able to lease cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs), scooters and powered wheelchairs. As part of the worry-free package, all of our wheelchair accessible vehicles for sale come with insurance, maintenance, breakdown assistance and a mileage allowance of 60,000 miles.
The Motability Scheme can use your mobility allowance to help you obtain a suitable wheelchair accessible vehicle. There are two main options within the scheme:
- A new Motability car on a three-year or five-year contract hire lease.
- A new or used car on hire purchase, over a term of two to five years.
Once you have chosen which option you wish to use, you then agree to pay all, or part, of your allowance to Motability Operations for the duration of the contract hire or hire purchase agreement.
The first thing you need to consider is the size of Motability wheelchair accessible vehicle that you want. You need to choose a WAV dependent on your needs, particularly in relation to the measurements of your wheelchair. You need to check the seated height of you and your chair, the width of your chair’s armrests, the wheel-to-wheel width, height of the chair’s armrests and the overall length of your wheelchair too.

Accessing the Motability Scheme really isn’t complicated. If you receive Disability Living Allowance (Higher Rate Mobility Component) or War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement then you can qualify for a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
